Pediatric dentists only in ZG, LU, SZ?

Beitrag von maria »

Hello,

Never occurred to me that I will have a problem locating a dental specialist of such!

Early to start looking for a pediatric dentist for my 2 year old daughter, I faced the problem after she chipped her front tooth on the bedroom floor. I searched on the web for a Kinderzahnatzt in my area and found only 1! Only they don't accept new patients because they are full.
Even though the chip was not big the tooth needed polishing because it was rough and I am sure uncomfortable for her.

My next choice was a "kinder friedlich" dentist who accepted to see us the next morning. He polished her tooth ok but It was a disappointing experience as :
1. at his entrance he said that it was an utopia to imagine he will be able to do anything because he heard crying at the waiting room (she cried a bit for a different reason - 2 years old kid we are talking about)
2. he thought pediatric dentist are the ones that deal with the very difficult cases only - when I explained that in US they are the ones that work with kids only and all kids easy and difficult, he said he doesn't understand why in the states people are so obsessed with specializations.

As I do not agree, I would still like to find a specialist anywhere in/around Kanton Zug but my searches on the internet have not shown any results.
Any help? Advice?

Thank you in advance!

Dear Maria

Sorry to hear such a disappoining story from you. I hope, I can give you some additional information on your questions. I'm not too familiar with the specific situation in the canton of Zug, but Veronica has already provided you with addresses.

You might want to find a dentist with specialization in childrens dentistry in your region by searching on the website if the Swiss Association of Pediatric Pentistry (SVK, http://www.kinderzahn.ch). I have attached some screenshots at the end of the article where you can see how to use the website and various filters.
On the website, also all the members are listed. Each member can decide on an individual basis whether to display any further information or not when you click on «More…».

I'm pretty confident that most dentists will take care of problems such as you mentioned. Sure, a lot of them do not see very young children every day and therefore might have a different approach to those patients as someone who does that on a regular basis.

Here in Switzerland we also might have another philosophy concerning treatment, necessity of treatment and the overall experience of of the dentitry for the children. Here, some in the US (still?) common procedures, like treating children with the use of a papoose board, would never be accepted and considered as inhumane and «cruelty».
We rather consider a «friendly approach» with children at the dentist to avoid the development of dental anxiety with a bad experience at the first visit already…

Depending on the severity of the injury there are also different approaches to the treatment. If there is only a small injury (as you mentioned in your case) it is usually not necessary to do a treatment at the first vistit. I haven't seen any children that do not get used to a rough tooth surface within a couple of days – polishing can be done any time thereafter, if necessary at all. The experience shows that it is often much easier and more fun for the cildren, if you take your time and give the children room to become familiar with the dental setting. This way the small children can become long term cooperative and self-confident patients.
Sure, if there are severe injuries that require extensive treatment, things are different and quickly become more complex.

I have also attached a link and a flyer of the University of Zurich with information on dental trauma (different sizes in one document).

Hope that helps!
